The rigid plastic keeps my boots from unsightly creasing due to flopping over. Because I have wider calves, the included hanger won’t work because the boots will just fall. I think of it as protecting an investment; and, at such a reasonable price, you can't go wrong! :) These are great to stop my wife's boots from flopping over. The ONLY reason that I did not give a fifth star is that, the spring mechanism inside does not have adequate pressure in the boot to hold the boot for hanging purposes. I have closet space, and I would like to hang her boots using the hanging hooks provided, but they don't grip the boot well enough. You can't really use the hanger part without it slipping, but I didn't want to anyways since I have a shelf for my boots.Edit: they're still holding up well, so I'm buying 3 more for some of my other boots!
