Description

From the Label One of two anthologies that survey Scofield's Gramavision years. This one emphasizes some of his most highly charged performances and memorable compositions. With two tracks from each of his six projects for the label, it is a particularly effective summary of the guitarist's period with the label.

I do have a preference for ballads . I do favor the ballad collection indicated above . This high energy collection , with a couple of exceptions , can be seen as the opposite of the ballads collection . The songs are , almost , uniformly hard driving . What another reviewer here wrote is true . One could take any two songs from John's Gramavision discs and have a swell introduction to John (paraphasing) . That appears to be about what happened . With someone of John's amazing and totally unique skills and style of playing , it's an easy thing to do (pick two) . Similar to Panara Bread . While i have recordings of John's i favor , this is a solid intro to the rollicking side to John during these years . Years when John was using a lot of non-piano or hammond organ keyboards in his various bands . Yes , There is NO substitute for the discs themselves . Especially when writing about GREAT and GROUNDBREAKING electric recordings like BLUE MATTER , STILL WARM and LOUD JAZZ . A couple treats here are the two songs from the vastly underrated FLAT OUT with female drum phenom Terri Lyne Carrington (you saw her on the Arsenio Hall show if you were old enough) "The Bosses Car" or drumming legend Johnny Vidacovich "Science And Religion" , both with the remarkable Anthony Cox on bass . Steve Swallow probuced that session . The two songs culled from PICK HITS LIVE are sweet and lovely as well . Poor Robert Aries (keyboards) is all adrift on this live disc of which he's featured on only one song here . On the studio album that preceeded PICK HITS LIVE (LOUD JAZZ) Robert deferred to to keyboard giant George Duke when Solo spots arose . Very good intro for those bored by ballads . At these prices , you "literally" can't go wrong here .
