Biff Bang Pow were one of the very first bands on the Creation label --- in fact, label founder Alan McGee was lead vocalist --- and I think also one of the very best of the 1980s They had the jangly guitars, swirling organ riffs, a retro psych-rock vibe, and radiant songs. If you were a fan of any of the other great bands of the era --- everything from Felt and the Weather Prophets to Ride and Jesus & Mary Chain --- I think you'll find a lot to like on this excellent compilation. In the liner notes, there are some comments from Normal Blake of Teengage Fanclub. He said: "Alan wrote really memorable songs that still sound relevant almost twenty years later (let's now make that closer to 30 years!). I'm especially struck now by Alan's singing voice, innocent and tender." Another comment in the liner notes, this one by Jason from V-Twin, says: "Alan never lost his working-class roots. A real feeling of joy and happiness emanated from anything the Pow did. Singing a Biff Bang Pow song makes you feel like you have lifted a great weight off your shoulders. The same sense of release that I hear in soul music."Very well said. Although you'd never mistake Biff Bang Pow for a vintage soul band, I think it's accurate to say that their songs certainly DO have that "same sense of release" and sheer joy about them. Uplifting, if you will. The whole synthesis of well-crafted songs, jangly guitar, tight rhythm section, spooky keyboards, and a distinctive lead vocalist combine to make Biff Bang Pow a most excellent band, and one that should be more revered by their contemporaries. This is musical gold!
