I heard this album in my early twenties and what I remember most is that it stuck with me. Somewhere along the line I lost it and I'd occasionally come across the case, recently I ordered a new cd copy. I have no idea when I first heard Gill Evans but I've loved all of his work and collaborations. He brings a disciplined and thought out sound to Jazz and it's probably hard to quantify, but there is a great very well mixed studio quality about his productions. For the classic free form jazz fan it might be too sterile or "clean" but he really does bring an exciting quality to his work.As for Miles Davis, i've never really been a fan, I've grown up listening to him for years and he is representative of a form of jazz i've yet to appreciate; that said when he comes into play it's amazing. Miles Davis work here is playful but with purpose, there is a reason to the notes and tunes he belts out. It's a interesting listen, obviously there is enough said here to scare off Miles Davis fans and maybe it should be like that, he is the focus point, but this is really about Gil Evans, it's definitely different and i don't know any other jazz album that has quite this sound.
